What is Psychodynamic Psychotherapy?
Influenced by psychoanalysis, this evidence-based approach posits that, like an iceberg, much of the mind lies below the surface and takes time to uncover. Research shows that our thoughts, feelings and actions are often shaped by mental processes outside our awareness.
Our past and childhood shape these processes, which tend to stay with us over time. Often without realising, we repeat old ways of thinking and relating to others. In therapy, we gradually shed light on these patterns in a safe and non-judgmental space to make sense of long-standing behaviours.

How It Differs from Other Approaches

Psychodynamic psychotherapy differs from some other approaches, which often focus on changing unhelpful thoughts and behaviours or relieving symptoms within a specific timeframe. Instead, it seeks to understand the underlying processes contributing to those symptoms, taking a whole-person, depth-oriented approach at a pace that feels right for you.
Studies show that its benefits may extend beyond therapy. It can be helpful for depression, anxiety, relationship issues, personality-related concerns and for those seeking greater self-understanding. In Singapore, psychodynamic therapy is limited with waiting lists in public settings.
